Videoscoping Derby Peregrines.

The following video was recorded during June of 2009. The start of the video shows the Falcon feeding three young birds. This is followed by some close-up footage of the Falcon whilst she was resting on one of the gargoyles at the top of the cathedral tower.

To clever by half, very good indeed. Still not managed to see what you did on my camcorder.

Karen Anne, I have changed the setting on the video so that you can download the source video. This should make it run smoothly.

The videos I have recorded this year are in “full HD”. This means the resolution is 1920 x 1068 at 25 frames a second (pal format). Whilst this is great for me using my camera directly connected to my HDTV, it’s very difficult for the majority of people to play as you need a top of the range PC on a big screen. I have reduced the resolution to the highest I can find that is support by web sites like youtube. Vimeo was suggest to me by Nick Moyes (thanks again Nick) which seems to be as good as it gets at the moment at 1280 x 720.

Sue in Bucks, my passion for peregrines and photography has pushed me to where I am today with respect to ability. Capturing these amazing birds in action allows you to seen much more than the naked eye. As far as the master class goes I would love to do one but I don’t think it would pay the mortgage. There is a free class running at Derby cathedral during the peregrines breeding season. Many good amateur photographer turn up like Colin, Andy, Simon & Claire, Graham, Andy + Chris just to mention a few all of which get chatting and learn from each other. I must say it does helps if you live close to the cathedral so you can put the time in.

Thank you all for the nice comments, I will let you know when I’ve uploaded the next video via the project blog.

Dear Jon,
I am French and I have found your video when I was looking for example of videoscoping. I must tell it is one of the best I have ever seen.

I have some questions for you :
-which kind of eyepiece do you use for the video ?
- I have tested a lot of camcorders on my swarovski scope (ATS 80 HD + 30x ww) and with no ones I can use the zoom of the camcorder. When I zoom, even if it is just a little, I have some vignetting...
- Are some of the images you show in the video post-proccessing with selecting a new square into the video to get a better magnification (at one minute of the movie)? If yes, when you do this, do you lost a lot of quality?

Camcorders make good videos with my scope however it is impossible for me tu use the zoom, so the magnification is quitely low...that is my main problem.

Sorry for my really poor english !
Thanks for your answer
